Brazil Trip

Our trip to Brazil

Our son, Brian, served a mission to Brazil from November 2000 to November 2002. We had the good fortune of being able to visit Brazil for the final week of his mission, to meet many of the people he knew there, and see where he worked. We also met a very fine man in São Paulo who had invited Dave to lecture at the University of São Paulo and hosted us for two days.

A painting in Pres. Sergio Carboni's residence depicting missionaries in the city of Salvador.

President and Sister Carboni seated in the front, with the group of missionaries that were released with Brian. Brian is on the right.

From left to right: Sister Carboni, Pres. Sergio Carboni, Brian, Dave, and Barbara.

Dave and Brian, in downtown Salvador, overlooking the bay and the famous elevator that takes people from the upper city to the lower city.

A music shop in downtown Salvador. Dave is outside talking with some missionary buddies of Brian's

Dave and Brian posing with Sister Janete Obata.

Sister Janete became our contact in Brazil for helping to get Dave's game, Mortality, published in Brazil.

Brian planning his day with his typical missionary planner.

These twin blue hoods were their phone booths and were seen all over in and around Salvador.

This is the beach at Salvador.

Barbara and Brian are posed at the Christ statue near the famous Barra lighthouse.

We asked a local to take this picture of us, posed overlooking the "Beach of the Lighthouse."

We bought some coconuts for "coconut water." Barbara had hers open to sample the coconut inside.

These coconuts were grown for the coconut milk and didn't have much meat in them.

Brian with Sister Maria da Conceição and her 13-year-old adopted daughter.

Brian had baptized another adopted daughter, Michele, when he served there. He learned on this visit that this other daughter had been baptized as well as two other families through the influence of that first convert.

Overlooking the beach in the Barra neighborhood where Brian had worked.

The sunset over the "Praia do Porto."

The Atlantic Ocean is to the east. This view is from a section of Salvador that includes a large bay. The sun here is actually setting over the bay.

We at crab at a local restaurant.

Because of the favorable exchange rate, we had a very nice meal with appetizers and drinks for the three of us for about $20.

The Itapuã Ward, where Brian worked for several months.

Visiting in the house of Sister Teresa.

Another member of the ward, Alessandra, is seated to the left. These sisters also came to the airport the next evening to see Brian off.

Sister Luciana, a convert of Brian's in the Itapuã neighborhood.

Pedro is on the right, Lucival, a convert of Brian's in the middle, and Brian and Barbara on the left.

This was a mango plantation in Salvador. Pedro insisted on giving us cacao fruits.

Lucival also cut down three coconuts for us. Pedro's wife has joined us.

Barbara, Dave, and Brian, posed with some members of the Itapuã Ward in their family history center.

Young people from the Itapuã Ward posed with Brian outside the chapel.

Brian and Dave posed with Antonio.

Antonio had been baptized through Brian's teaching just a little over a year ago, and was very excited to see Brian again.

Sister Elvia ran this streetside stand that served acarajé. Posed with us are some other friends and members.

Acarajé is a native dish that has a bun made out of meal and then copped beans, vegetables, shrimp, and who knows what. From left to right: Barbara, Elvia's sister, Brian, Ivana, Elvia, and Ivaneide.

Brian making a phone call in downtown Salvador.

The park features some statues in the water with fountains and is quite pretty.

Dr. Sergio Ourique graciously gave us a tour of São Paulo on Friday the 22nd before Dave's lecture.

He took us to see the São Paulo temple and was very interested in the temple and the nearby bookstore.

We had just arrived at the Cedar Rapids airport. Brian, Dave, Spencer, and Barbara are in the picture.
