Summer 2003

Summer 2003 Hall Family Photos

The notable family event of the summer was our trip to Minnesota in late June/early July. We stayed in a cabin right on Lake Superior and enjoyed beautiful weather while we were there.

Lunch at the St. Clair Broiler

On the way up to Grand Marais, we stopped to see our daughter, Rachel, at Macalester College in St. Paul. We took her to lunch at a local restaurant, the St. Clair Broiler.

Our cabin we rented on Lake Superior

On the very left, almost completely hidden in the woods, you can see the cabin we stayed in. We love it right on the lakeshore.

Grand Marais harbor

We took our boat out for a spin on Lake Superior Here we are launching at the lake access in Grand Marais harbor, with downtown Grand Marais in the background. Spencer is on the dock.

Spencer in the boat on Lake Superior.

We boated down the coast about ten miles. It was a lovely day.

Dave and Spencer.

Spencer helped Dave install his Fathers' Day presents on the bike--a speedometer and new lights.

Barbara Hall and Sharon Eliasen.

Barbara and Sharon discovered they both had accidents that damaged their front teeth on Monday, June 23 and spent almost all afternoon Tuesday, June 24 getting their front teeth re-done, and were both wearing temporary crowns all across the front. Here they are posed, both showing off their temporary front teeth.

Dinner at the Eliasens.

Sharon fixed us some lasagna and had us over for dinner. Left to right: Barbara, Sharon, Spencer, Jared, the dog Toby, and John Henry.

Sharon and John Henry (Hank) posed with their dog in front of their home, which is right on Lake Superior in Grand Marais.

The Harry Potter game.

Spencer and Dave played a round of Spencer's game in the cabin.

Jared going out on the bike.

Barbara and Jared took a little bike ride. Here Jared is posed out behind the cabin.

Jared and Lake Superior

On Tuesday, July 1, Lake Superior was dead still. Jared is seated on the railing overlooking the lake.

The seagulls.

Barbara snapped this picture of the seagulls in front of our cabin.

Doing sparklers.

On July 3 we had our own pre-Independence Day celebration on the beach. Dave built a bonfire and we had sparklers and a fireworks show put on by Spencer.

Barbara, Spencer, and Jared.

Posed at the donut shop in Grand Marais. We have to visit the donut shop every day we're there--their donuts are so delicious.

Jared, Spencer, and Dave

We splurged one day and went for pizza at Sven and Ole's, the hot pizza place in town.

Dave's state record whitefish.

Dave caught a new state record Menominee Whitefish on Devil Track lake on July 4th. The only trouble was, we didn't register it because we didn't know what kind of fish it was until we got back to Cedar Rapids. See the story as written up in the Cook County News Herald at www.davehall.com/recordfish.htm.

Eating the record whitefish.

This photo was also published in the local paper. Sunday, July 6, Barbara baked our record whitefish for a delicious Sunday dinner.

Leroy.

This is the tree Brian planted when he was in second grade that died FOUR TIMES! We thought it was dead again from being planted in an area that was too wet, but, when we returned from Minnesota we found that it had sprouted up again!

Spencer at Scout Camp.

July 14-19 Spencer spent with his troop at scout camp. Here's his tent. He made more progress toward his Eagle--almost there!

Vern Hartson up a tree.

Our big 100-year-old oak tree died over the winter. Here's our home teacher, Vern Hartson, doing extra-mile service helping to cut it down. There's enough wood in this one tree for the whole neighborhood.
