The first pictures are from the Nauvoo Temple Dedication. That was a big focus for us in May and June – we had the open house and then the dedication June 27-30.
August 5-10, Dave and Spencer took a vacation up to Grand Marais, Minnesota. That’s up about thirty miles from the Canadian border – in Minnesota Boundary Waters area. We rented a little cabin right on the shore of Lake Superior. We took our newly-purchased 1973 speedboat up with us and had a lot of fun. We went fishing every night at Devil’s Track Lake. We never come away empty-handed from Devil’s Track.

Then we have fall 2002 photos of Spencer in the Mt. Vernon High School marching band where he was a freshman. He enjoyed High School immensely.
After that, we have pictures of our pumpkin-carving family home evening activity night.
Here is a close-up of the youth at the temple trip. Jared is on the far left - Spencer on the far right.
In July, the youth from our branch went down to the Nauvoo Temple for baptisms for the dead.
In July, both Spencer and Jared got to participate in the 5-stake youth conference in Oskaloosa. Here they are the day we picked them up.
This is the youth choir that participated in the preliminary ceremonies of the dedication. Spencer was privileged to be able to sing with that choir.
Here's Dave posed in front of the temple for the temple dedication.
Spencer, sitting with the band, enjoying another Mt. Vernon High School football victory. On his right is his friend Jason Jones, who, besides playing in the band, plays on the junior varsity football team. Kelly, the section leader, is in the foreground.
Here is Spencer on the boat. Just to the left, in the background, you can see Five Mile Rock. This island in Lake Superior is five miles from Grand Marais. You can see the seagulls that inhabit the island.
We had a belated birthday celebration for Spencer. We invited Steve Pokorny to join us. We met him the day before as he, in a true Good Samaritan spirit, stopped to help us fix our boat when the starter went out. He wouldn't take any money, so we invited him to dinner.
Spencer, front and center, playing his sax for the Mt. Vernon marching band's first home football game.
Here's the beginning of our Minnesota vacation photos. This is the view from the front porch of the cabin we rented - an absolutely gorgeous, peaceful location, smack on the shore of Lake Superior, where we could hear the surf all night long.
This is the Bonneville Communications truck that was the uplink for the satellite connection - the dedicatory sessions of the temple were broadcast to 72 countries.
Spencer (with the green neck strap) marching in the Mt. Vernon homecoming parade.
Here is the Mt. Vernon Mustang marching band at the state marching band competition. Spencer is on the far left, the second row from the top.
Dave coached little league again - here's his team, the YMCA Marlins. He's on the left. Spencer is in the back in the middle with his uniform on. This was our traditional end-of-season cake-and-soda party.
This is looking straight down from our front porch at some visiting geese and ducks. You feel very close to nature up in northern Minnesota.
One of the first things we did was take our boat out for a spin on Lake Superior. Here is Jared enjoying himself.
Carey and Debee Gold treated us with a visit in August. We delayed Jared's birthday party so they could participate. Here are Haley, Hannah, Uncle Jared, Jaron, and Braxton posing with Chuck E. Cheese.
Spencer and Barbara at our evening on-the-boat cookout.
One gorgeous evening, we took our grill on the boat and cooked our previous day's catch sitting on the boat. It was so calm, we didn't even need an anchor to stay put.
Here are the Young Men from our branch on a bike hike. Left to right are Alex Yancey, Jacob Starks, Derek Seehusen, Pres. Jeff Cardon, Lawrence Yancey (Eddy), Spencer, and our Young Men's President, Chad Gonzales.
Barbara and Dave went to the Nauvoo Temple open house. Here Barbara is posed in front of the temple. It gives you a majestic feeling, just to be on the Nauvoo Temple grounds.
Barbara showing off her big Northern Pike that she caught at Devil Track Lake. She got the record biggest fish of the vacation.
July 21 - Barbara's birthday, posed with Jared and Spencer
Here's our German Shepherd, Alexis, cutely perched on our picnic table, surveying the pasture, I guess.
